Not Exactly a Lie, Not Totally Objective

I tried not to speak up, but just can't help it. I keep thinking about it and feel a need to ask around for your opinion.

This is a news of 5 days ago which I reckon affecting some of your travel plans. At least that is happening here to some of people I know in Angola. As a result of this blacklist, Angolan government bans European flights going into and out of Angola. Some of these people have scheduled their travel back home in Europe and needed to cancel because of this situation.

But still relating to the same news, what I care about the most is Indonesia. Although I really hope that my suspicion is not valid, I have a fear that on this particular issue Indonesia is being a victim of bad publication. Well I hope I am not correct, that is why I am writing this post to ask for your opinion.

It is the news on 28th June on airlines banned and blacklisted by EU.

The Title of the article is: EU bans all Indonesian Airlines.

All Indonesian airlines including national carrier Garuda are to be banned from the European Union. An updated blacklist of unsafe airlines also includes operators from Bulgaria, Moldova, Angola and Ukraine.

The new list includes all 51 carriers from Indonesia, eight from Moldova, six from Bulgaria, Angolan carrier TAAG Angola Airlines and Volare Aviation from Ukraine.

- From BBC

To start with, I'd like to let you all know that I am not a fan of Indonesian airlines. Surely in my opinion they are very reckless of safety, they had series of accident for the last couple of years, and the last accident happened to Garuda Airlines, the national airline that was considered the safest in the country. In this particular accident too, the loved one of one of my closest friends died. I lost my faith in Indonesian airlines since then.

However, something really strikes me is the fact that this article put Indonesian airlines as the headline. As much as I am deeply disappointed by Indonesian airlines, I still don't think Indonesia deserve such exposure.

Until today, none of Indonesian airlines operate in Europe, not even close. Only one Indonesian airline that serves longer distance than regional, which is Garuda Indonesia Airline. I reckon that Garuda is planning to re-open the route to Amsterdam from Jakarta in 2008, but up to today, no flight is flying to EU or the region around. The other 50 only serves domestic flights. You see, it is not even halfway distance to Europe!

I personally think that in this case the media is not being objective in exposing Indonesian airlines as the headline of this EU's blacklist. It is not a lie that Indonesian airlines messed up lately, but the fact is that out of the 51 airlines as said in the article, 50 of them is not touching Europe and not even planning to. It is not a good publication for the nation and again, Indonesia image suffers badly. For this, I am quite sad. :(

But again I am not from media industry. Moreoever, I do not know too much about EU and their policy. So, I am not at all an expert to judge. What do you think: Is media or EU being fair to Indonesia?

well...you may lost your faith in Indonesian Airlines...
but never lose your faith in God:):)
spiritually speaking, the good news is...people will surrender more on God's Will...even the safest airlines in this world still has a chance to get an unpredicable accident...only God knows:):) just surrender everything to God, then our fears will be gone:):)

Nadia,I read your comment at Unspun. Yes, because of the poor safety record, the EU has banned all Indonesian carriers from their territories. It is a blanket ban based on their safety record at home and report from FAA having graded them Category 2,meaning safety levels of all carriers suspect and not meeting ICAO standards. That is why it is absolutely essential that there be no accidents AT ALL.

I see you are now living in Angola. What are you doing? Please drop by my pages and comment.Would like to hear from you.Cheers.

The media isn't exactly fair, but then again all 51 Indonesian airlines are being banned, so that is worth headline news. In the end, it does not matter much as, as you pointed out, there are no Indonesian carriers flying to the EU.

It does sound like the EU is being harsh on Indonesian aviation, but then again they are harsh on African and South American aviation as well. This ban should actually serve as a kick in the ass for Indonesian carriers, to rise the maintenance and safety standards, but being Indonesian, all they will do is complain then do nothing else and leave everything as is. That is more saddening than the headline on BBC.

Oh well, there are thousands of carriers in the world and lots of them are being banned by the EU.

What was I ranting about again???

yeah, you are all right... it is really a big slap in the face for Indonesian aviation. Hopefully after this they are increasing their safety record. Still thinking though... how can you ban something that does not even get close to you? Still does not make sense to me... *bingung nih pegangan dulu*

Well, currently the Indonesian carriers don't get close enough to the EU but if there are plans then that Indonesian carrier better step up it's maintenance and safety standards,

And this ban is also a warning for EU citizens travelling in Indonesia, so that they know that the standard of Indonesian aviation is not up to EU standards,

And on top, this can also be a precedent for EU approved carriers to start serving Indonesian domestic routes, specifically catered for EU citizens.

Masih bingung? hehehehehe

same here, i'm not a fan of indonesian airlines too.. but i think EU is overexaggerating. i don't mean from their point of view that indonesian airlines are reckless, cuz i agree that many of indonesian airlines still don't really prioritize safety. but this game has become like two kids in kindergarten.. especially now indonesia just announced that they will ban european airlines.

if the other 50 planes don't even fly to europe and the ban means for european citizens to not fly indonesian airline while their in indonesia.. what does that mean? they are not allowed to come to indonesia? since now they european airline cannot come to indonesia, that leaves other airlines to reap the benefits. doesn't sound like a fair play.

it's just ridiculous, don't u think??

It's more politically and economically motivated silly, unfriendly move, I guess.

Judgement is almost always one sided, where the big bosses can do and say whatever they want. Double standards, however, were not rare.

Only a few leaders in developing or underdeveloped countries have guts to voice out the unfair treatments, and act bravely for a better world order.
